Purple Twilight and Autumn Leaves

Earlier this summer Raikoke, a volcano in eastern Russia erupted. This event on the Earth’s surface produced particles of volcanic ash that have since been dispersed through much of the Earth’s atmosphere. Following a substantial volcanic eruption, the appearances of sunrises and sunsets may be greatly altered for several months, as the ash alters the amount that sunlight passing through the atmosphere is scattered. The result for is often several months of vivid sunrise and sunset colors, and that has become the case currently, following the eruption of Raikoke.

The waning crescent Moon has also been visible in the eastern sky before sunrise on clear mornings this week. I decided to try to find a suitable location from which I could possibly capture the purple twilight color along with the Moon and drove to Blandford, MA.
